Maidstone Conservatives have formally taken the leadership of Maidstone Borough Council. The change took place on 22nd May at the Council’s annual meeting.
Cllr. David Burton (Marden & Yalding) was elected as the Leader of the Council and Cllr. Jonathan Purle (Bridge ward) was elected as his deputy.
David Burton commented, "Conservatives are ready to start making the changes which Maidstone needs to make it the county town we can all be proud of, with keeping villages special and a thriving local economy. We want Maidstone to be the cleanest, greenest and safest part of Kent. This means a fundamental change in the council, listening more, making the right decisions, with a focus on delivering core services better and efficiently. It means action on the conditions which blight people’s lives from poor air-quality and fly-tipping through to delivering tighter planning and fighting for better roads’’
Association chairman, Andrea Thorpe, congratulated the five newly elected borough councillors across the Maidstone and Weald constituency and thanked all the candidates who stood in the election. "Firstly, my congratulations to David Burton on his election as leader of Maidstone Borough Council, and to all the new councillors and candidates for a winning campaign. This win is testament to the hard work of a great team, with special thanks to Andrew Kennedy, Campaign Director, and Jeff Tree, our campaign manager. We had a fantastic young and vibrant cohort of candidates, who have matched energy and enthusiasm with commitment. Now we have Conservatives in control to make the changes needed for so long."
Maidstone Council is just one of sixteen councils to have been placed back under Conservative control following the local elections on May 6th.
